Al Arabiya Network launches Al Arabiya Business platform

Al Arabiya Network, the Arab world’s leading source of news, announces the launch of Al Arabiya Business, a brand-new service dedicated to news and updates from the world of business, finance and more.

The launch of Al Arabiya Business comes in response to the growing demand for comprehensive and real-time coverage surrounding increasing and accelerating political events in the region and beyond necessitating more extensive and continuous coverage by Al Arabiya and Al Hadath TV channels around the clock.

Al Arabiya Business is available for free-to-air broadcast, as well as live streaming via Shahid, the world’s leading Arabic streaming platform, in addition to Al Arabiya Network’s website and YouTube.

Waleed bin Ibrahim Al Ibrahim, Chairman of MBC GROUP and Al Arabiya Network, stated: “Al Arabiya and Al Hadath’s commitment to extensively covering significant events in the region – including current events in Gaza – has driven us to introduce Al Arabiya Business, a platform primarily dedicated to business and finance updates. It’s widely recognised that the heartbeat of global financial markets never falters, even in the midst of conflicts and disasters. Our objective is for Al Arabiya Network to maintain its status as a trusted source for viewers seeking updates on economic and financial developments, all the while staying informed about the ongoing critical events in our region and worldwide.”

Mamdouh AlMuhaini, General Manager of Al Arabiya Network and Al Hadath, added: “The financial and business sector, as highlighted in our ‘Aswaq Al Arabiya’ [Al Arabiya Markets] programme, has garnered considerable attention from our viewers. In light of the upsurge in conflicts and significant events, especially in the Middle East and North Africa – such as the earthquakes in Turkey, Syria and Morocco, the war in Sudan, and the ongoing situation in Gaza – our viewers are increasingly eager to stay informed around the clock.

“As a result, we made the decision to launch Al Arabiya Business as a service dedicated to the latest updates, as well as streaming ‘Aswaq Al Arabiya’ as standalone segments, aligning with our commitment to cater to our viewers’ ever-evolving informational needs, be it in the realm of politics, economics, or the business sector.”

Al Arabiya Network celebrates 20 years of being on air

Al Arabiya Network, the Arab world’s leading source of news, celebrates its 20th anniversary of being on air.

The network – which launched on 3 March 2003 – has been unwavering in its commitment to honesty and credibility, striving to provide unrivalled news coverage through its editorial approach. Al Arabiya Network emphasises impartiality towards its viewers by promoting responsible speech, truth, news, and free expression of opinions.

The launch of Al Arabiya Network twenty years ago came at a time when the Arab region and the rest of the world were witnessing major historical and geopolitical transformations, most notably the Iraq War. It was throughout this period that the broadcaster cemented its position in the region as an important source of news as its highly skilled and dynamic team of journalists, editors, and producers delivered around-the-clock, impactful, and superior news coverage, in addition to local and global economic, social, and cultural affairs.

Over the last decade alone, Al Arabiya Network has fearlessly reported from the very epicentre of events, including the Syrian, Libyan, and Yemeni wars, in addition to live coverage of political movements in territories such as Egypt, Lebanon, Iran, and Turkey. Other notable events in recent history include the COVID-19 pandemic, the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and its resulting energy and supply chain crises.

Waleed bin Ibrahim Al Ibrahim on broadcasting from Riyadh, digital expansion, AI, and globalisation

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the news network, Waleed bin Ibrahim Al Ibrahim, Chairman of both MBC GROUP and Al Arabiya Network, has revealed that there’s a “new strategy” in place for the next phase of Al Arabiya Network. This phase of expansion has already commenced following the moving of the broadcaster’s headquarters to the Saudi capital of Riyadh, where the latest content is created from a brand-new state-of-the-art news television studio.

Al Ibrahim stated: “Broadcasting from Riyadh signifies a new phase in Al Arabiya Network. This new phase in our wider strategy also comprises digital expansion, artificial intelligence [AI], continued regional leadership, as well as a focus on global leadership.”

He added: “Over the last two decades, Al Arabiya Network has undergone both horizontal and vertical growth, transforming into a fully integrated news network. It has established itself as a beacon of media credibility, journalistic impartiality, and technological advancement across the world – a well-deserved reputation that has aligned with Al Arabiya Network’s vision since its inception in 2003.”

Mamdouh AlMuhaini, General Manager of Al Arabiya Network, added: “Throughout its twenty years, Al Arabiya Network has worked to become a trusted source of news thanks to a highly qualified team of journalists and producers sharing events with our Arab viewers wherever they are. Al Arabiya Network continuously keeps pace with the major transformations witnessed by the Arab world and the world at large; as a result, it has been able to meet the needs of its audience by providing a reliable news service around the clock, in addition to constantly leading the way in utilising advanced technology available to the media industry.”

AlMuhaini continued: “All of this wouldn’t have been possible without Sheikh Waleed bin Ibrahim Al Ibrahim and his board of directors, who – since day one – have been committed to drawing up a professional strategy focused on continuously and consistently developing and advancing Al Arabiya Network’s capabilities. This has resulted in transcending regional boundaries and establishing Al Arabiya Network as a trusted source of news around the world.”

Tamara the AI journalist

Considered a pioneer in adopting AI for news production, Al Arabiya Network became the first broadcaster of its kind to launch an AI “journalist” named Tamara.

Unveiled at the 17th edition of the Arab Media Forum in 2018, Tamara can analyse and process millions of information pieces in just a few milliseconds, as well as identify fake or incorrect news, as well as rephrase news articles into different formats based on a journalist’s requirements.

Meanwhile, in late 2022, Al Arabiya Network unveiled its first AI host, Mira, who is fronting a programme called “Tech”. This marked the first time an AI presenter has hosted a regional show.

Digital expansion

Part of the Al Arabiya Network is Al Hadath, which focuses on extensive live coverage and news bulletins of events via TV and social media as they happen from across the Arab world and beyond.

Al Arabiya Network also operates a number of digital platforms under its umbrella, as well as the leading podcast service in the region, which is followed by and interacted with by millions around the world.

AlMuhaini explained: “Today, the network boasts approximately 180 million followers on our social media platforms, with content produced by our editorial team and channel correspondents recording views exceeding one billion views per month! These figures no doubt place Al Arabiya Network at the forefront of Arab and regional news channels and is on par with global counterparts as well.”

In recent months, Al Arabiya Network was the recipient of four awards at the 2022 Peacock Social Media Awards – part of the World Social Media Forum held in Amman, Jordan – including the award for ‘Best Podcast Service in Middle East’.

Another recent notable award saw Al Arabiya Network being honoured for ‘Excellence in Visual Storytelling’ at the BroadcastPro ME Summit and Awards 2022 in Dubai, UAE.

‘Akthar’ for Al Arabiya Network

As mentioned, Al Arabiya Network has proven its superiority in keeping up with major events that occur across the world.

In late 2022, it announced the launch of Akthar, a new digital content brand that features programmes focusing on various topics aimed at the region’s increasingly tech savvy media consumers. The offering complementing Al Arabiya Network features eight social media channels covering travel, cryptocurrencies, motoring, health, and more.

AlMuhaini elaborated: “The word ‘Akthar’ [which translates into ‘More’] is used to describe our commitment to continuously develop and expand Al Arabiya Network with no boundaries. And our celebrations have begun since broadcasting from our new studios in Riyadh. This development includes all stages of content production, with an unrivalled level of creativity.”

AlMuhaini also touched upon Al Arabiya Network’s commitment to providing opportunities for Arab youth, stating: “Our young journalists and editors use the latest technologies available to deliver news and knowledge in a contemporary style that resonates with the new generation’s lifestyle and content requirements.

“Our constant commitment to innovation truly boosts pride of being part of the Al Arabiya Network family, which fosters an excellent work environment and builds on the strong traditions that Al Arabiya Network has established over time.”

Paying tribute to those who lost their lives in the search for the truth

The 20th anniversary of Al Arabiya Network also remembers those who lost their lives during their service reporting from war zones and conflicts.

Referring to fallen colleagues as “martyrs of credibility and impartial news”, AlMuhaini acknowledged the sacrifices these individuals made in the pursuit of delivering the truth and overall journalistic excellence.

AlMuhaini stated: “I take this opportunity for us to once again pay tribute to our colleagues lost in service, and I extend my condolences to all of their friends and families. Their memories will always be cherished, especially during times of remembrance like these.”

He added: “I’d also like to pay tribute to those who risked their lives while reporting on important events, including kidnappings, imprisonment, and injuries. Despite the dangers they faced, including injury, these journalists remained committed to delivering accurate and truthful news to the public on behalf of Al Arabiya Network.”

Al Arabiya relaunches with new technology and design

Al Arabiya relaunches with new technology and design

Dubai-based pan-Arabic broadcaster Al Arabiya has unveiled new technology, studios and design across its television and digital platforms in a move designed to retain its top spot in a highly competitive market.

The Al Arabiya News Channel, a 24/7 free-to-air news and current affairs satellite outlet, is ranked the top news channel across many countries in the region, reaching 36 million viewers a week. The network has seen strong growth in its social and digital platforms, including Al Arabiya English and other foreign language editions, with more than 20 million users viewing 88 million web pages every month.

“We are relaunching with new studios, a new design and more importantly, taking advantage of new technologies that will take the viewer into the next generation of journalism across not only our television screens but also our social media and digital offerings,” said Mamdouh Almuhaini, General Manager of the Al Arabiya Media Network. “The network has always stayed ahead of the curve compared to its competitors by renewing itself either through branding or improving its content.”

Partnering with global companies

The revamp involved rebuilding the broadcast studios in Dubai’s Media City to integrate new technology and set design. Al Arabiya partnered with New York-based Clickspring Design for the set design. The new studios are equipped with robotic Blackcam cameras that will enable the viewer to have a more immersive experience, showing not only the anchor but also the dozens of writers, reporters and editors that bring the content alive. Al Arabiya collaborated with Ross Video, whose Cambot cameras allow viewers to move anywhere around the studio floor. The network partnered with Belgian company Barco to deliver networked visualisation solutions.

New ‘organic and younger’ branding

Al Arabiya is also launching a new visual identity including an evolved logo, new on-air graphics and an updated font. The redesign of Al Arabiya’s unique Arabic font is the first since the channel launched in 2003.

“We created the original Al Arabiya font 17 years ago and it was the first font to be used on-screen. The font became so popular that it spread everywhere, being used by so many designers in the world, including big brands, as showcased on so many billboard brands and places,” said Fadi Radi, Head of Creative.

Al Arabiya’s staff began working on the revamp several months ago before the global coronavirus pandemic hit, which delayed the relaunch by a few weeks. But Al Arabiya’s General Manager Mamdouh Almuhaini said employees pushed through with limited people on site.

“We had to change some of our procedures as we had to reduce our physical staff to 20 percent at our studios, while the rest of our team worked from home. Despite the difficult circumstances, we are sure we will be providing something that is fitting of the Al Arabiya name and fitting of what Al Arabiya’s viewers expect of their network,” Almuhaini said.

Al Arabiya: establishment of an Editorial Board and Dr Nabil Khatib appointed GM

In a statement released on 1 January 2019, Waleed Al-Ibrahim announced the establishment of an Editorial Board for Al Arabiya and Al Hadath News Channels, headed by AbdulRahman Alrashed and including members: Mazen Turki Al-Sudairi, Ali Hedeithy, Salman Al-Dossary and Faisal J. Abbas. Al-Ibrahim also announced the appointment of veteran journalist Dr. Nabil Khatib as the new General Manager of Al Arabiya and Al Hadath. Dr. Khatib succeeds Turki Al-Dakhil, who held the position since January 29, 2015.

In the same context, Al-Ibrahim said: “The main objective behind the establishment of the Editorial Board is to provide both channels with the best available human capital and expertise, while noting that it enjoys the kind of independence that’s necessary to secure the highest levels of professionalism, editorial integrity and credibility”. The Editorial Board will support the management of Al Arabiya and Al Hadath while helping streamline the business, across multi-platforms and touchpoints.

Al-Ibrahim further added: “Whilst welcoming Dr. Nabil “back home” to his family – where he spent nearly 13 years as one of Al Arabiya’s key pillars –  I’d like to praise his academic accomplishments, skill-set and proven track-record. His appointment falls in line with the on-going commitment to propel Al Arabiya and Al Hadath to new heights – thus benchmarking with international standards”.

Al-Ibrahim concluded: “I’d like to thank our colleague Turki Al-Dakhil for managing Al Arabiya and Al Hadath over the last couple of years”.

It’s worth noting that Dr. Nabil Khatib enjoys a wealth of experience in Broadcast journalism, with a primary emphasis on News, coupled with an academic record in teaching and training – both students and professionals – in Journalism, Mass Media and Communication.
