minute windows of Euronews into
their programme grid. In Honduras
we finalised an agreement with
broadcaster TeleProgresso; in
Colombia the deal with public
broadcaster RTVC gave us the
chance to get Euronews into 12m
homes. So people began to hear
about us and watch us on the main
broadcaster. We kept on doing
these short 30’ windows – on an
education channel in Brazil which
reaches 17m households, on Canal
22 in Mexico which reaches 20m
homes. We don’t make our content
available free of charge, we get paid
for this. So it’s a real negotiation
process where we are trying to
bring additional value through a
different perspective and approach.
For the past three years we’ve
been to all the main cable and
broadcasting conferences and
shows in Latin America with a
ince 2013, Euronews
has been available
part-time in
Colombia. Now,
through the
agreement with
Claro, for the first
time Colombians will benefit from
full-time access to Euronews. After
agreements with Claro Nicaragua
and Claro Peru, this new deal
enables us to improve our
distribution in Colombia. Claro
Colombia is part of the leading
telecom operator in Latin America,
America Movil. In Colombia the
company offers wide coverage with
TV, mobile telecommunications and
broadband, and their subscribers
can find Euronews on the "TV
Digital Avanzada" offer, in Spanish
and in English. For us, this is an
important step to increase our
visibility in the country, and to
strengthen our partnership with
Claro in Latin America.
For Euronews, Latin America is a
really strategic area for distribution
– our competitors were on the main
platforms long before us. We
arrived after broadcasters like BBC
World News, Deutsche Welle, or
CNN which are really strong with
their franchise in Chile for example.
So it has been very tough. But the
beauty and the power of Euronews
is its multi-linguism, that we can
provide content in 13 languages,
including Spanish.
Our strategy was to talk, step by
step, to the most important
operators. Deals like the one with
Cablevision in Argentina gave us the
opportunity to build more aware-
ness of the channel and move forward
in places like Mexico and Peru.
We also talked with public
broadcasters, to integrate 30-
Independent multi-platform hub Euronews is now reaching a new audience on
Claro, the leading Colombian cable operator. Recently the international news
channel extended its agreement with CTH in Thailand, boosted its cable
presence in Germany and later this year is set to launch Africanews. It is soon
to move into a new HQ in Lyon. We asked Euronews’ Worldwide Distribution
Director Arnaud Verlhac and Regional Distribution Manager Céline Rodrigues
how the Colombian deal fits into the channel’s strategy
