Renewed collaboration strengthens ties between Rti and the Association for International Broadcasting and brings the world’s leading journalism awards to international audiences

Radio Taiwan International (Rti) has renewed its partnership with the Association for International Broadcasting (AIB) and will serve as the official Broadcast Partner of the AIBs 2026, the 22nd annual international awards for journalism and factual productions.

The renewed agreement continues a successful collaboration between the AIB and Rti and reflects the two organisations’ shared commitment to independent journalism, international dialogue and media freedom.

As Broadcast Partner, Rti will make coverage of the AIBs 2026 awards available through its platforms, bringing the work of outstanding journalists, producers, presenters and programme-makers to audiences in Taiwan and around the world.

Rti will also sponsor the News Coverage – Audio award, recognising exceptional radio and podcast journalism that delivers authoritative, timely and compelling reporting on major events.

The partnership builds on renewed ties between the AIB and Rti and their growing cooperation across international broadcasting, journalism and public service media. It also highlights the increasingly important role played by Taiwan’s international media in connecting the country with global audiences.

Cheryl Lai, Chairperson of Radio Taiwan International (pictured), said:

“Radio Taiwan International is proud to renew its partnership with the AIB and to serve once again as Broadcast Partner of the AIBs. At a time when reliable information and independent journalism are more important than ever, the AIBs provide an essential international platform for recognising the journalists and programme-makers who help audiences understand an increasingly complex world.

“Rti connects Taiwan with audiences around the globe through journalism rooted in public service, editorial integrity and international understanding. This partnership enables us to support those same values while bringing exceptional work from across the international media industry to audiences in Taiwan and beyond.”

Simon Spanswick, Chief Executive of the Association for International Broadcasting, said:

“We are delighted to renew and strengthen the AIB’s relationship with Radio Taiwan International. Rti is a highly valued partner whose international outlook and commitment to trusted journalism closely match the principles that have underpinned the AIBs for more than two decades.

“Through this partnership, Rti will help us showcase outstanding journalism and factual storytelling from every continent. It will also enable audiences around the world to discover work that informs, investigates, challenges and inspires.

“The renewed collaboration is an important part of the wider relationship between the AIB and Rti, and we look forward to developing further opportunities to work together in support of international broadcasting and media freedom.”

The AIBs are one of the world’s longest-established international competitions for journalism and factual productions. Entries are accepted in all languages and are judged by an independent panel of more than 60 senior media professionals drawn from every continent.

The 2026 competition has attracted entries from broadcasters, production companies and independent journalists around the world, reinforcing the AIBs’ position as a global barometer of excellence in journalism and factual storytelling.

The winners will be announced at the AIBs 2026 gala awards evening at the Park Hyatt London River Thames on Friday 20 November 2026. The event will bring together leading journalists, editors, producers, executives and commissioners from across the international media industry.

Radio Taiwan International (Rti) joined with Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the American Institute in Taiwan, the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, the Australian Office, and the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei in hosting a Global Cooperation and Training Framework (GCTF) International Workshop from September 9 to 11, 2025. Themed “Building Democratic Resilience: The Role of Media Literacy in Defending the Information Space,” the event brought together nearly 140 government officials, NGO representatives, and scholars and experts from 26 countries.

The workshop highlighted the importance of strengthening media literacy to enhance democratic societies’ ability to counter disinformation and external interference. Discussions covered a wide range of topics, including election monitoring, fact-checking, the impact of emerging technologies, private sector responses, and social media literacy. The program also featured dedicated sessions spotlighting youth engagement and international cooperation. Young leaders shared hands-on experiences, while participants exchanged strategies and best practices for combating disinformation—underscoring the shared determination of democracies to confront information challenges together.

The organisers also arranged site visits for international participants to Radio Taiwan International and the National 228 Memorial Museum. These visits provided deeper insights into Taiwan’s efforts in advancing democracy and safeguarding information freedom, further enriching the workshop’s breadth and depth of exchanges

In her opening remarks at the event, Radio Taiwan International (Rti) Chairperson Cheryl Lai (pictured) noted that as of September 9 this year, Taiwan’s democracy has officially persisted longer than its period of martial law. She stressed that although Taiwan has become a vibrant democratic society since the transition and enjoys the benefits of free speech and free press, that does not mean there are no challenges. Lai pointed out that with the rise of AI, disinformation often spreads faster than it can be corrected. To improve societal resilience against fake news and cognitive warfare, it is therefore crucial to improve citizens’ media literacy.

Lai also pointed out that Rti has gained international recognition in recent years and that, as a key national infrastructure, it has been committed to combating information warfare.

The GCTF was first established by Taiwan and the U.S. in 2015 with the goal of leveraging Taiwan’s unique strengths and expertise to jointly organise training programs on issues of mutual concern. With the subsequent addition of Japan, Australia, and Canada as official partners, it has become a multilateral platform; over the past decade, GCTF has held more than 90 international workshops and attracted thousands of experts and officials from 135 countries.

Rti gains RSF certification

Radio Taiwan International (Rti) has officially received the Journalism Trust Initiative (JTI) certification from Reporters Without Borders (RSF). This achievement marks not only the first time a Taiwanese media organisation has earned the certification but also the first for a news outlet serving Chinese-speaking audiences.

To obtain a JTI certification, media outlets must first complete a comprehensive self-assessment covering 18 categories and 130 standards—including disclosure of ownership types, funding sources, editorial policies, accountability systems, fact-checking procedures, and staff training. After publishing a transparency report detailing this self-assessment, they must then undergo an independent third-party audit before being officially certified.

Over 2,000 media organisations in 110 countries have adopted the JTI certification process, with 100 already certified by external agencies such as Deloitte or Bureau Veritas.

Director of the Journalism Trust Initiative, Benjamin Sabbah, noted that JTI serves as a best practice framework for news organisations globally and expressed hope that more publishers will follow Rti’s lead.

Rti Chairperson Cheryl Lai (pictured) emphasised that the certification not only positions the organisation as an international media partner—standing alongside global news agencies and showcasing the strength of Taiwanese journalism—but also signifies Rti’s support for international non-governmental organisations like RSF, thereby helping to deliver important information to audiences around the world.
