7:45 PM Paris time (Part 2)

France 24 is launching ‘Europe Rendezvous’, a new magazine show featuring reports and interviews that explore different regions of the European Union, highlighting their challenges, achievements, and people. The 34-minute programme, presented by Armen Georgian in English, and ‘Aux 4 Coins de l’Europe’ by Caroline de Camaret in French, is broadcast every other month on Saturdays.

The first episode of ‘Europe Rendezvous’ heads out to the heart of the Atlantic Ocean and visits one of the EU’s most isolated Outermost Regions, the Azores. Made up of nine islands, with around 240,000 inhabitants, the Portuguese autonomous region depends heavily on EU funding, receiving approximately 160 million euros in cohesion funds each year.

Through interviews with local leaders and business owners, France 24 journalists explore the impact of the EU funding on the islands’ development and delve into the natural beauty of the Azores.

Part 1 – EU budget and its impact on the Azores:

  • Armen Georgian interviews José Manuel Bolieiro, President of the Autonomous Government of the Azores, who voices his concerns over the European Commission’s push to centralise cohesion fund management.
  • A report by Charlotte Prudhomme and Renaud Lefort looks at the EU budget negotiations in Brussels and their implications for Outermost Regions.
  • A closer look at the islands’ cultural heritage, including its tea plantations, which date back to the 19th century and are the only remaining active tea producers in Europe.

Part 2 – The Azores and the Atlantic Ocean:

  • An inside look at the Azores’ sustainable tourism, where EU-backed initiatives, such as a whale-watching company’s switch to electric vessels, are helping balance economic growth with environmental protection.
  • An interview with MEP Paulo do Nascimento Cabral, a leading voice behind the European Ocean Pact.
  • A visit to the Nonagon Science and Technology Park on São Miguel Island, followed by an interview with MEP Ana Vasconcelos on fostering innovation in the Azorean economy.
  • A profile of a local farmer who relies on EU cohesion funds to finance 80% of her farming equipment.

 Three special reports:

How the EU is helping to save Flores Island from flooding, a report by Luke Brown.

  • Inspiring young Azoreans to shape their future, a report by Luke Brown
  • Waste threatens the Azorean paradise, a report by Luke Brown

France 24’s English-language channel is now available for streaming on nbc Plus, the digital platform developed by Namibia’s national broadcaster, the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC). This strategic partnership marks a significant step in France 24’s efforts to strengthen its presence in Southern Africa by integrating into a rapidly expanding digital ecosystem.

Launched in 2018, nbc Plus offers a hybrid service that combines live television channels with video-on-demand content (VOD), currently available on Android devices. The platform’s reach extends well beyond Namibia, with a growing audience amongst the Namibian diaspora in the UK, the US, Canada, and Germany.

The arrival of France 24 in English enhances nbc Plus’ international content offering, whilst aligning with the platform’s ambitions for continued growth. nbc Plus strives to deliver an optimised viewing experience, featuring a redesigned interface, high-definition streaming, intuitive navigation, and an expanding catalogue of both local and international programming.

AIB dismayed as Togo bans French international media for three months

The Association for International Broadcasting is dismayed by the decision of Togo’s High Authority for Audiovisual and Communication (HAAC) to suspend the broadcasts of France 24 television and Radio France Internationale in the country for three months.

According to the press reports, HAAC claims that the Paris-headquartered broadcasters have “repeated failures, already reported and formally recalled, in terms of impartiality, rigour and verification of facts”. In 2024, the HAAC put RFI “on notice” for “unfair treatment of information” and “dissemination of false news about the country”.

“This suspension of independent fact-based news organisations deprives citizens of Togo of important information sources,” says AIB Chief Executive Simon Spanswick. “At a time when rumour spreads on social media platforms, the checks and balances provided by international broadcasters such as RFI and France 24 are vital to counter mis- and disinformation. The AIB calls on the HAAC to rescind its reported suspension rapidly and to allow RFI and France 24 to resume broadcasting in Togo.”

Also in June, a correspondent working for France’s TV5 Monde, Flore Monteau, has been arbitrarily detained in Togo. Monteau had been covering anti-government demonstrations in Lomé and was filming the dispersal of protesters by security forces. CPJ says that police seized her equipment and forced her to delete footage of the protests. She was also required to unlock her mobile phone by the police.

Togo, with a population of just under 9 million, is ranked 121st in the World Press Freedom Index 2025 published by Reporters Without Borders.
