The shortlisted entries are now hosted on Yahoo! Maktoob, the premier digital media company, attracting millions of users across the Middle East and North Africa region, as well as a wider global audience. Entries in Arabic have English subtitles, while the English entries have Arabic subtitles, making all of them accessible to a vast number of viewers worldwide. The winner of this award will be decided by the online viewers voting for the entry they think is best.
The topic for this years Peoples Choice is “Best Coverage of Democracy Uprisings” and the award attracted many high quality entries which reported on the unfolding events of the Arab Spring, as well as providing analysis and examination of its impact on everyday life in the countries involved and also showing international reactions.
Hosam El-Sokkari, Head of Audience, Yahoo! Middle East said, The short listed entries deliver content from top broadcasters around the world, and as the premier digital media company, were very excited to be hosting them on Yahoo! Maktoob. Its important that we engage our audience and have them vote for their favourite videos, as they continue to be part of the storytelling of these moments in history.
Simon Spanswick, CEO of the Association for International Broadcasting said, The entries also demonstrate some of the best features of traditional broadcasting: journalists striving to cover the important stories wherever they are, even sometimes risking their lives to cover battles on the streets and in the desert; seeking out and piecing together the stories behind the headlines; and providing the context that explained it to a global audience.
