Fran Unsworth named new Director of BBC World Service

Fran_UnsworthFrancesca Unsworth has been appointed Director of the BBC World Service Group.

In this role she will lead the BBC’s global news services – BBC World Service, BBC World News and BBC.com/news – as well as BBC Monitoring, and will chair the BBC’s international development charity, BBC Media Action. The BBC’s global news services have a weekly audience of 265m.

Fran will also continue to act as deputy to the Director of News and Current Affairs.

Director General of the BBC, Tony Hall, said: “I have known Fran since she joined the BBC and watched in admiration as she has become that rarest of things: a lifelong BBC insider who thinks like an outsider. Her range of skills and experience combined with a quite exceptional gift for management makes her exactly the right person to take over the enormously important job of directing the World Service Group. I am thrilled with her appointment.”

Director of BBC News and Current Affairs, James Harding, said: “Fran embodies the best of the BBC: she is thoughtful and enabling, tireless and determined, interesting and smart. Fran is already known for her record in fighting for journalistic freedom and free expression. I know she will prove an inspiring and respected director of the World Service, inside the BBC, in Britain and around the world.”

Fran Unsworth said: “Today is the proudest day of my professional life. I do not take on lightly the responsibility of looking after a part of the BBC with such a proud history. I promise to be the guardian of the best of the BBC’s values of independence, impartiality and fairness in our international services, while continuing the successful modernisation of the World Service Group to take our journalism to new audiences worldwide.”

Fran began her journalistic career in 1980 in BBC Local Radio joining Radio 1’s Newsbeat. She spent a spell as a network radio producer in Washington DC and later joined Radio 4’s The World At One and PM.

Fran was appointed the BBC’s Home News Editor and then, in 2001, Head of Political Programmes. In 2005 she became Head of Newsgathering, running one of the world’s largest newsgathering operations with bureaux across the world.

Between November 2012 and August 2013 Fran was the BBC’s Acting Director of News and Current Affairs. She is currently Deputy Director of BBC News and Current Affairs.

Fran will become the first female director in the 82-year history of the World Service. She will take up her new post on 8 December 2014. She succeeds Peter Horrocks, who announced earlier this year that he was leaving the BBC.

AIB is pleased to announce that next month’s AIB Awards, honouring the highest achievements in factual TV, radio and online programming worldwide, will feature award-winning director Olly Lambert as the evening’s special In Conversation guest.

Lambert has been called “one of the most talented documentary filmmakers working in British television” by The Times and is also the first Filmmaker in Residence for BBC’s Newsnight. AIB’s In Conversation will allow the director to take the stage and answer questions about his creative process, his challenges as a filmmaker, and the state of factual content production.

Last year’s AIB In Conversation guest was photojournalist Giles Duley. You can watch the In Conversation interview with Duley, hosted by AIB’s Simon Spanswick, here.

Olly Lambert’s Channel 4 documentary, Syria: Across The Lines, won the prestigious AIB Award for best Middle East documentary in 2013 and has gone on to win numerous other awards, including an Emmy for Outstanding Coverage of a Current News Story, a BAFTA for Best Current Affairs Programme, and the Rory Peck Award for Best Broadcast. Lambert was also nominated for an Emmy for his documentary The Bombing of Al-Bara.

Syria: Across the Lines featured an unflinching look at the residents of Syria’s Orontes River Valley and how their peaceful coexistance had been torn apart by the radicalisation and sectarianism of Syria’s civil war.

The AIB Awards will take place on 5 November at the spectacular LSO St. Luke’s in London and will be hosted by BBC presenter Matthew Amroliwala. Tickets are still available through the Awards website or by calling +44 (0) 207 993 2557.

For the first time, MIPCOM, the global entertainment content market, launches a conference event to support and discuss a key sector of the international television business ‐ the distribution of TV Channels around the world.
The aim of the programme is to create a central point of interaction for channels and platforms to meet, and to provide an educational forum specifically dedicated to showcasing new channels and carriage platforms (cable, satellite, IPTV, OTT).

Organised by Reed MIDEM, the 30th anniversary edition of MIPCOM will take place in Cannes, France, from 13-16 October 2014.

This one day programme will take place on Monday October 13th in a dedicated area and will include a series of business-oriented conferences and workshops. Mediamétrie/Eurodata will present data and comments on the growing channel distribution market and leading international platforms will unveil their strategies for the year to come. The ‘Driving the Quest for The Audience: Channel Distribution Strategies for Success’ conference session will showcase new channels with international appeal.

“With the increasing presence of multi-service operators and channels from around the world, carriage deals are a growing part of the market. Our ambition is to become the international business destination for the carriage ecosystem,” comments Laurine Garaude, Director of Reed MIDEM’s TV Division.

“It is vitally important that channels and platforms understand each other’s businesses,” says Simon Spanswick, Chief Executive of the Association for International Broadcasting (AIB). “Neither sector can operate independently of each other. This new initiative at MIPCOM is, we believe, essential as the distribution market becomes more complicated as new platforms launch.
AIB is delighted to be part of this important concept that is designed to bring businesses together and start conversations that will turn into business deals.”

The first Global Channel Distribution day at MIPCOM will bring together the French Telco & Pay TV operator Orange, German Telco and IPTV operator Deutsche Telekom, Globecast, Al Jazeera’s global network, A+E networks, Scripps Networks International, EbonyLife TV and OTT service operator Magine.
