Channel NewsAsia presents a debate on the urgent questions facing the region today

As Asia continues to make headlines, Channel NewsAsia launches another season of its high profile programme, Bridging Asia – the Singapore Debates, where experts and thinkers from diverse fields come together to exchange perspectives on some of the
most pressing issues confronting the region.

This season, Bridging Asia goes “live” to give voice to five topics demanding our attention
today. Some eminent experts include Professor Mark Thompson of the City University of Hong Kong, Tunku Abdul Aziz Ibrahim of Transparency International Malaysia, Mr Xu Sitao of the Economist Group in China and Mr Andrew Bruce of the International Organisation for Migration. (See Annex 1 for details). Each episode will feature two teams comprising two speakers a side. The debate will be moderated by Mr Gaurav Keerthi, former president of the Debate Association Singapore.

The motions for the five debates, starting 2 October, are as follows:
1) Can Asia beat corruption?
2) Will Myanmar be a democracy in a decade?
3) Does Asian migration bring more benefits than drawbacks?
4) China or India – who will be ahead in 2030?
5) Should happiness be the national target?

The moderator and speakers will be joined by three expert adjudicators, and 50 studio audience members made up of esteemed members of society, specialist groups, and interest groups. The adjudicators will “critique” the panellists based on the strength of their arguments and also add pizzazz to the proceedings with their questions. The judges are established personalities in Singapore – Mr Chelva R. Raja SC, Mr Adrian Tan and Ms Eleanor Wong. (See Annex 2 for details).

Bridging Asia is a highly interactive programme for the studio audience and those watching from home. Studio participants can engage the panellists in a Q&A segment and help decide who wins the votes at the end of each session, while non-studio viewers can also ask questions and vote for their teams via the Bridging Asia microsite, and their smartphones.

Executive Producer of the series, Ms Huang Weixian, says, “Since the last inaugural season of Bridging Asia, remarkable moments have emerged like Aung San Suu Kyi winning a parliamentary seat in Myanmar, the Middle East continuing to be on tenterhooks and China moving closer to a historic leadership change. It’s more timely than ever to debate where Asia stands amidst these rapid changes. The interactive nature of the programme and the Judges’ views of the debate will introduce some interesting elements in the exchange of perspectives.”

Episode 1: Can Asia beat corruption?
Tue, 2 Oct 2012, 8-9pm (SG/HK time)

Euronews announces new era for 2013

In 2013, Euronews will enter a new era. Launched almost 20 years ago, in January 1993, the rolling news channel has transformed into an ecosystem that is today experiencing a revolution. It has achieved global-brand status: a brand that is a byword for a global news hub. What ambitions does it have for its 20th birthday? The answer: 20 major announcements, all presented during a press conference held simultaneously in over 20 countries.

For this exceptional milestone, Euronews is responding with an innovative format and quantity of announcements. During a press conference in Paris, connected to over 20 cities worldwide, Michael Peters, the channel’s CEO, presented Euronews’ key directions and ambitious mission for the coming years.

Euronews has taken an entertaining and highly engaging approach to highlight the brand’s distinctive character and impressive market dominance. Using a unique format, Michael Peters explained the two pillars of the channel’s strategy with strength and conviction:

–      Enrich the channel’s brand capital through its values by anticipating and enhancing the users’ experience, wherever they are in the world;

–      Affirm its role as the only independent, powerful, benchmark media outlet in “the European public space”. The only outlet that offers a multicultural, pan-European perspective on the world thanks to its editorial team of 400 journalist-reporters from over 25 countries.

“Today we are experiencing a situation never before witnessed by any industry. In a media world where every frontier is disappearing, in a competitive marketplace where choice has exploded, we are all facing decisions. Decisions that we must take amid a revolution,” said Michael Peters at the press conference.

“As a global news hub, Euronews is today the world’s only media experience that is multinational, multicultural, multilingual and multi-shareholder.

“Euronews has never been so strong. It enjoys ever-expanding reach, a fast-growing audience across all platforms; and, most importantly, an extremely efficient news production model. All geared to our sector’s only real need: the user experience.

“Never before in its history has Euronews had so many advantages to meet the challenge of establishing itself as the world’s leading news brand,” declared its CEO.

The 20 announcements below reflect the ambitious course that the channel has set in a period of high-paced revolution, during which continuous change is vital if the channel is to thrive.

The 2012 AIBs | shortlist released

The shortlist of entries in the 2012 AIBs, the international media excellence awards, has been announced.

“The shortlist has been even more challenging to compile this year,” says Simon Spanswick, AIB chief executive. “We received more entries from more organisations than ever, and most were of an extremely high standard. This made selecting the finalists for the 2012 AIBs extremely difficult. Some hard decisions were made, and now it is up to our global panel of judges to deliver the names of the winners in this year’s competition.”

The international panel of judges includes programme makers, journalists, editors, producers and executives across every continent – full details of all the judges are here. Over the coming four weeks, they will be evaluating and reviewing entries and submitting their results in time for the annual gala evening on Wednesday 7 November.

“This year, the judges are receiving the entries electronically,” says Spanswick. “For the first time, we have done away with the need to ship DVDs, audio CDs and accompanying paperwork around the world by courier. Instead, all the material is online for judges to watch or download at their leisure. It makes these awards a little bit greener.”

The gala awards evening in London will be hosted this year by Evgenia Altfeld, a presenter/producer at RTG TV in Russia. Evgenia has worked in TV news in Russia before becoming a political spokesman in the St Petersburg region. She joined RTG TV in 2011 and now produces and presents a range of programmes for the Russian travel channel.
