Intelsat (NYSE: I), operator of the world’s first Globalized Network, powered by its leading satellite backbone, announced today that the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MOTC) of Myanmar will utilize services on two Intelsat satellites to advance the deployment of the country’s wireless communications infrastructure, and expand broadband access for businesses.
The multi-year, multi-transponder agreement awarded under the authority of the MOTC will allow the Government of Myanmar to significantly enhance the Myanmar government’s network as well as other mobile operators’ networks, hastening the expansion of high speed broadband and internet connectivity to business and communities throughout Myanmar.
“Over the past few years, Myanmar has made significant strides in expanding access to faster and more reliable broadband connectivity throughout the country,” said Khin Maung Thet, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport and Communications. ”With the help of Intelsat’s Globalized Network, we will leverage their satellite solutions to extend 2G and 3G communications services beyond urban centers and ensure that all of our citizens have access to higher bandwidth, superior quality and more affordable mobile broadband connectivity. Today’s announcement further underscores our commitment to building a more digitally inclusive society.”
MOTC will use C-band satellite services on Intelsat 902 located at 62° East, and Ku-band services on Intelsat 906 located at 64° East for VSAT network and cellular backhaul services. By 2018, MOTC will move to the new, high power services on the recently announced Intelsat 39 satellite, the replacement spacecraft at the 62E orbital location. By integrating satellite solutions into its own mobile networks, MOTC will be able to dramatically increase overall network bandwidth and reliability as it expands 2G and 3G services into the more remote areas of Myanmar.
“Access to affordable broadband connectivity is essential to the exchange of data and ideas that support economic growth of individuals, communities and countries, and it is rewarding to be part of such an important project in Myanmar,” said Stephen Spengler, Chief Executive Officer, Intelsat. “Our services will help enrich the lives of the communities it serves by improving medical and educational access, providing a lifeline during times of crisis and enabling Myanmar to foster strong relationships within and outside of the country.” (Source: Intelsat press release)

Azerbaijan’s Supreme Court has ordered that RFE/RL journalist Khadija Ismayilova be released from custody after reducing her prison term from 7 1/2 years in custody to a suspended term of 3 1/2 years.
The court made the decision on May 25 after hearing an appeal by the journalist.
“This is a great day for Khadija, and for all journalists and for free speech everywhere,” RFE/RL Editor in Chief Nenad Pejic said. “We are overjoyed for Khadija and her family and can’t wait for her to get back to work.”
The Baku court’s decision is “truly great news,” U.S. Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Rick Stengel said on Twitter.
“This is the right decision by the court in Baku,” said Simon Spanswick, chief executive of the Association for International Broadcasting. “The AIB has followed this story constantly and has campaigned for Khadija’s release and for the trumped up charges against her to be dropped. We look forward to seeing Khadija reunited with her family and friends.”
The court reversed Ismayilova’s convictions on charges of misappropriation of property and abuse of position, but upheld her convictions for illegal entrepreneurship and tax evasion.
Ismayilova was not in court at the time. Her lawyer, Fariz Namazly, told AFP that “we expect her to leave prison later in the evening.”
Ismayilova was detained in December 2014 and sentenced in September 2015. Western governments and international press-freedom groups have called for her release.

A new visual identity
Produced in conjunction with prestigious UK agency Lambie-Nairn (BBC, Euro 2012…), the new visual identity of Euronews is designed for the digital age and entails a complete graphic overhaul of its news segments, main programmes, and all digital products
Set to music by composer David Lowe (BBC, ITV, Premier League…), the identity aims to inject rhythm, power and greater intensity into Euronews’ news flow and all its content.
In a sense, this identity marks a return to essentials in support of the new claim: promoting a wealth of viewpoints, as only a powerful and independent media outlet like Euronews can do.
A new responsive design site
Also on 17 May, the beta version of the new revamp site will be launched in order to further build the loyalty of our multiple diverse digital audiences worldwide. The new euronews.com has been designed in cooperation with design experts of Brand42 as part of a whole new ecosystem of non-linear services.
This new digital platform offers: a fully responsive design (for phones, tablets and computers), positions Euronews perfectly to cater for new consumer habits. On Euronews’ platforms and those of its partners, of social networks and OTT services, the type of screen no longer matters.
The revamped euronews.com offers more perspectives on key news stories. It keeps the same mix of vital, accurate reports but, with its user friendly centric approach, the new site will provide more viewpoints from Euronews’ hundreds of reporters from 35 countries.
A new programming schedule
The programming schedule is also reshaped: in weekdays, the day is organised in four time slots (CET Central European Time):
