Al Jazeera signs largest ever advertising contract

The Al Jazeera Network has announced it has signed its largest ad campaign agreement with the Turkish Ministry of Tourism and Culture for an undisclosed amount.

Speaking from Al Jazeera’s headquarters in Doha, Commercial Director Abdullah Al Najjar said, “We are delighted with this agreement. It represents the growing recognition within the commercial sector of the strength of the Al Jazeera brand and the value of advertising on Al Jazeera. We take great pride in this agreement and our relationship with the Turkish Ministry of Tourism and Culture.”

H.E. Mr. Mithat Rende, Turkish Ambassador to Qatar said, “Al Jazeera has emerged as the leading network in the region and in the process the network has become one of the most familiar international brands. We recognize this value, and therefore, it was quite natural for the Turkish Ministry of Tourism and Culture to choose the Network to broadcast its tourism ads. I am very happy with this relationship and I look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with the Network.”

The ad campaign will start in June on Al Jazeera and will showcase the Turkish Ministry of Tourism and Culture’s new advert.

Al Jazeera’s portfolio of advertisers includes international names such as Reuters, Sony, Nokia, Shell, The Malaysian Tourism Authority, Dubai Tourism and Cyprus Tourism as well as Tanmyat, Pepsi, Samsung, Etihad Airways, Qtel, LG, Qatar Airways, QNB, General Motors, Red Bull, Master Food Snickers, Qatar Financial Centre, Rolls Royce, Vodafone, Qatar Petroleum, Reach out to Asia, Dubai Properties, Mercedes .

Russia Today joins YouTube

The English-language TV channel Russia Today has launched its own section at YouTube portal. The channel plans to use the YouTube service to showcase its top news, reports, documentaries and stories.

”For us, the agreement with YouTube is the chance to widen audience of our channel by hundreds of thousand users of Internet, for whom, watching TV on the computer monitor is more habitual and comfortable,” said Russia Today Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan.

The section will be renewed each day and the access to Russia Today’s stories will be free for all users.

Deutsche Welle launches mobile video format

German international broadcaster Deutsche Welle is now offering hourly updated one minute news headlines for mobiles – in German and English.

DW has been experimenting with special Internet services for mobile phones since 2005 – for the football world cup 2006 30 languages were on offer.

The German and English programmes of DW-RADIO were also recently launched for mobile reception.

The new ‘DW-TV News’ service is available free of charge from mobile.dw-world.de, for use with UMTS or EDGE-enabled mobile devices such as mobiles, PDAs or Pocket-PCs.

RRSat enhances access to North America through Galaxy 23 satellite

Al Jazeera goes live in South Africa

Al Jazeera English, the international news channel based in Doha, is now available in Africa thanks to a deal with MultiChoice’s DStv platform. The channel went on the air on DStv channel 62 on 31 May 2007 at 10.00 CAT (Central African Time).

Al Jazeera English is the first English language global news and current affairs channel to be headquartered in the Middle East and broadcasts to more than 90 million cable and satellite households worldwide. The channel – which boasts one of the largest international newsgathering operations of any broadcaster – is also available through live streaming and via YouTube.

Al Jazeera English has a strong presence and high level of expertise in Africa through its bureaus and dedicated resources. The Channel currently has bureaus in Cairo – Egypt, Abidjan – Ivory Coast, Nairobi – Kenya, Johannesburg – South Africa and Harare – Zimbabwe and shares the resources of Al Jazeera Arabic Channel’s African bureaus located in Ndjamena- Chad, Tripoli- Libya, Nouakchott- Mauritania, Rabat- Morocco, Dakar- Senegal, Mogadishu-Somalia, Johannesburg- South Africa and Khartoum- Sudan.

BBC global audiences at new high

The BBC‘s combined international news services attracted a record global weekly audience of more than 233 million during 2006/7. The announcement of the new audience figures came from the BBC this month, drawn from independent surveys it commissions throughout the world.

The global audience figure for the combined services of BBC World Service radio, BBC World television and the BBC’s international online news service bbcnews.com is up 23 million from 210 million last year; notably, many people used more than one service. BBC World Service’s weekly radio audience estimate is a record 183 million, up 20 million on last year.

BBC World – the commercially-funded international English language news and information television channel – now has estimated record audiences of 76 million viewers a week, up from 65 million in 2005/6.

The BBC’s international-facing online news sites attracted a record 763 million page impressions in March 2007, up from 546 million in March 2006. There were a record 38.5 million unique online users across the globe during March 2007, up from 32.8 million a year ago.

BBC Global News Director Richard Sambrook said: “This is a strong and welcome indication that the BBC’s news services are strengthening their impact with audiences around the globe in the highly competitive multimedia age. People around the world are increasingly turning to the BBC when they need quality news and information that is independent and trusted.”

There were large BBC radio audience increases in Bangladesh – up 8.3 million. Increased survey coverage added 7.5 million to the estimate in Democratic Republic of Congo and 7.0 million in Afghanistan. Weekly audiences in radio markets in India, Nigeria, Pakistan and Rwanda all grew by a million or more during the year. BBC World saw substantial growth in audiences in Africa, Canada, Egypt, India, Pakistan and the USA.
