AFRICA IP NET
A new IP-based contribution
network, linking Africa's
broadcasters, is to be
deployed by the African
Union of Broadcasters (AUB)
in mid-2012. Supported by the
ITU and sister broadcast
unions, the systems will be
based on the Arab States
Broadcasting Union's
Multimedia Exchange
Network over Satellite. The
network has been developed
by satellite specialist Newtec
to provide the fastest and
most cost-effective technology
for exchanging media content,
as well as a complete range
of tools to facilitate related
coordination tasks.
BANGLADESH HD
In January Dhaka FM began
broadcasting as the first FM
station in HD Radio™ in
Bangladesh, setting an
important milestone in the
country’s phase II of FM
commercialisation
authorising new FM broadcast
licences. Only a few years
ago, Dhaka started out as
the first live Bangladesh
station on the internet.

SHOTPLAYER
VIDEO PLAYOUT
which develop and distribute
specialised software solutions
for the broadcast and new
media industry, has added
ShotPlayer to the popular
ClipJOCKEY studio production
suite – its touch screen
support gives users fingertip
control of video playout. With
ShotPlayer, news and sports
anchors control their own
rundowns, studio and show
hosts play out clips from a
visual play-list, presenters
have easy access to instruct-
ional content, and live
productions (sports games,
concerts) can bring animations
and videos up on the venue
screens.
HCT and twofour54
create hi-tech lab
Higher Colleges of Technology
has joined forces with Abu Dhabi
media and entertainment hub
o provide HCT
students with opportunities to
develop skills and careers in the
local media industry. As part of
the agreement, a dedicated
twofour54 lab will be established
at the HCT Abu Dhabi Men’s
College campus.
twofour54 CEO Tony Orsten
said the proposed media lab was
about forming a creative and
professional partnership with
HCT to engage local youth in the
burgeoning local media industry:
“This agreement reflects our
commitment to developing world
class Arabic media and
entertainment content by
stimulating local talent and
creating professional
opportunities for them here.”
The parties will also
collaborate on major HCT events,
and twofour54 will provide
internship opportunities and run
a series of workshops and
industry development events at
the HCT campuses and
twofour54 facilities.

primetime throughout the region
is also expanding – from six to
ten hours every day. For selected
Bloomberg TV+ business app
Bloomberg Television+ is the first
free, live streaming, 24-hour video
app for business news on the
Apple iPad and is Bloomberg's
latest, award-winning offering.
Viewers are able to watch the
live stream in portrait or landscape
as it appears on TV. They can
access on-demand episodes of
top shows, search clips according
to topic and watch breaking
news, interview highlights as
well as search biographies and
stock quotes relevant to the live
segments. The app also offers
exclusive bite-sized 'News
Express' updates. These videos
can be downloaded to a playlist
for viewing later and can be
shared via Twitter, Facebook and
email. Users can also customise a
running ticker to highlight sector-
specific news relevant to them.

DW expands
areas, such as the Asia-Pacific
region, DW will offer a 24/7
English TV channel with regionalised
content and new programme
formats. A relaunch of DW's
multilingual and multimedia web-
site with a more user-friendly
design is also in the pipeline.
French cable TV operator
Numericable has unveiled 'The
Box' which combines a STB and
router into a single unit to offer
triple-play with theme TV. It is
controlled with an innovative
remote control with keypad,
screen and keyboard and
features four TV tuners, a Blu-
ray player, 802.11n Wi-Fi, a
removable 40-500 GB hard drive
and two phone lines. The Box
includes live Facebook on TV,
VoD viewer recommendations, a
VoD price comparison engine
with 17,000 listings, and multi-
platform intelligent content
search from the keyboard.
Numericable offers 300 theme
channels and services, with a
multi-TV option and multiscreen
viewing outside the home on iOS
and soon Android, on phone or
computer. Customers can also
make unlimited calls to numbers
in France and fixed numbers in
100 destinations.
