Journalists killed while covering
the violence in Syria made up the
majority of news media casualties
in 2012 in one of the bloodiest
years on record. Preliminary
findings by the International
News Safety Institute show that
at least 156 journalists and other
media staff were killed because
of their work. The global death
toll is the third worst on record
since INSI began in 2003.
News crews have faced
unprecedented challenges while
trying to report on the unfolding
events in Syria, with journalists
killed in crossfire or targeted by
government or opposition forces.
Other journalists have been
attacked, tortured, kidnapped
and threatened.
It has been the deadliest year on
record for journalists in Somalia,
with 18 media workers killed –

TV + Idea
Bloomberg Television has
entered into a partnership in
Indonesia with Idea Group, a
Jakarta-based media and
strategic communication holding
company, with plans to launch
Bloomberg TV Indonesia in early
2013. Presented in the local
language Bahasa Indonesia, the
new channel will bring
Bloomberg’s market-moving
news alongside locally-produced
content to the world’s fourth
largest country by population and
Southeast Asia’s largest
economy. Bloomberg TV
Indonesia will partner with
existing broadcast entities and
air on FTA, pay-TV, internet and
mobile platforms.
Gary Groenheim, Commercial
Director of Bloomberg TV, Asia-
Pacific said the company had
long identified Indonesia as a
strategic emerging market and
with Idea Group as a partner aim
to take business news from its
traditionally narrow and
specialist confines to a broader,
mainstream audience.
Idea Group CEO Ziva
Narendra Arifin said the
partnership is based on a shared
mission of providing locally
relevant, influential business
content that will enhance the
lives of Indonesia’s rapidly
growing consumer class, which
has limited access to business
management education.
The new venture
complements Bloomberg
Businessweek’s existing
partnership with Idea Group and
continues Bloomberg TV’s
momentum in Asia, following the
launch of a state-of the-art
broadcast studio in Singapore
and of Bloomberg TV Mongolia.

The preliminary findings were
compiled in liaison with INSI's
regional contacts, the IFJ and the
International Press Institute.
