with whom they have strong links. Dr Leo
Bowman, News Director of QUT News
says, “ENPS has made the course
immeasurably more real and meaningful.
It has made it possible…to give our
students up-to-the-minute experience in the
production of TV news…We found that the
system was user-friendly to students who
were dealing with such specialized
software for the first time.”
Dr Bowman regards the ENPS training as
particularly valuable for students during their
compulsory internships: “When the students
go on internships, they are pleased to see that they canwork everything
and are more comfortable as a result.” More than 500 QUT students
have already been trained using ENPS, and a fifth of those students
are currently employed in broadcast journalism in Australia and
overseas. Leroy Ah Ben graduated in 2003 and is now working for
Win Television, a regional network in Rockhampton, Queensland.
“Training with ENPS during my university course was invaluable…it
places QUT students at a significant advantage,” he said.
SheridanCollege inCanada has hadENPS since 2000. SherineMansour,
Programme Coordinator of the Journalism New Media programme is
clear about the need to re-create aworking newsroom: “We choseENPS
for its ability to integrate ‘learning’ with ‘real-life’ features so that our
students will be prepared for the working world from day one”.
Also in 2000, Boston University installed more than 30 ENPS
workstations to train the 250 students in the Broadcast Journalism
Programme. Training is not confined to the classroom – the
students also use ENPS to produce cable newcasts, including the
nightly Neighbourhood Network News, a 30-minute newscast
which airs on Boston Cablevision. “This is a terrific system,”
says Professor Jim Thistle, Director of Broadcast Journalism
Programmes, School of Communication, “It’s versatile, extremely
dependable, user- friendly and easy to learn”. Again, the benefits
of ENPS training are apparent well before students graduate:
“Students go back and forth to internships here in Boston and
elsewhere and already know the system”.
Luleå University of Technology, Sweden was the first college in
Europe to use ENPS for training radio journalists. Luleå works in
close cooperation with the country’s radio industry and major
commercial radio networks and is an education and development
facility for the broadcast markets in Sweden and Europe. Ulf
Olofsson, Technical Support at Luleå says, “Since Swedish Radio
uses ENPS as their newsroom system and many of our students
are lucky to get employed by them, after a short introduction to the
system they are up and running…ENPS is a very useful and
powerful tool which is of most importance for this course, preparing
students for ‘the real world’.
Ex-Luleå student, Jenny Tibblin, now works for Swedish Radio:
“I use ENPS everyday at work and the fact that I knew how to use
it when I was a student increased my chances to get the job that I
have today. I’m very satisfied with the system because it makes
the communication a lot easier between the radio stations.
Everything I do involves ENPS and it would be hard not to have it.
My advice to young people is to learn ENPS before you apply for
a job in this industry.”
