The Global Media Debate
Terror and conflict : democracy vs security?
Some believe that Governments have succeeded in
controlling the media.Independent journalism in many
countries is under severe pressure following the recent
outcome of theHutton Inquiry and attempts to censor
journalists in countries such as Ukraine,Iraq,Zimbabwe,
Cuba and even the US. Is this because of shoddy
journalism, budget restrictions, public indifference or
smarter spin doctors hired by politics and business to
set the news agenda? Howwill independent journalism
fight back? And what about the resilience of our
businesses - can they stand up to the pressures being
exerted by state or those seeking to undermine the
state?
The debate will be chaired by BBC World’s Nik
Gowing and will include contributions from
broadcasters, politicians, regulators and observers
including
Aidan White
of the International
Federation of Journalists,
Max Uechtritz
of ABC
News,
Richard Sambrook
of BBC News,
Helen
Shaw
of Athena Media, Ireland.

Global Media Business – Europe
Crossing boundaries
Today’s successful media companies need to tear
down the borders between different arms of their
businesses to ensure their survival in the
competitive media environment. In Denmark, public
service broadcaster Danmarks Radio has
successfully integrated its television, radio and web
divisions to deliver better value and a wider range
of services to licence payers. Elsewhere on the
continent, co-operation between broadcasters is
flourishing. But does this mean a loss of editorial
independence in return for access to new audiences
in other territories? How do you measure success?
We present three case studies that could be models
for strategic success: from the
BBC
(presented by
Andrew Lyle),
Czech Radio
(David Vaughan) and
Danmarks Radio
(Lars Vesterlokke).

WORKSHOP - Figuring out the mix
It is clear that one solution is no longer sufficient to
serve a global audience. Getting the right balance of
radio, video, mobile & web production depends on
who you're trying to reach. Get the balance wrong
and your station may enter a new era - history.Join us
in this interactive workshop and hear how your
colleagues have re-engineered the corporation.Why
is New Zealand working on a digital radio strategy for
the Pacific? And how did recent experiments in Hong
Kong work out? Is subscription radio really working?
What can we learn from colleagues in Europe and
other continents? Come with your success story and
hear reactions from a range of specialists including
Peter Gordon
, Digitalisation Manager, VT Merlin
Communications, and
DavidHawkins
,Digital Radio
Business Manager,RadioScape.

Global Media Business – Sport
2004 is a big year for sports broadcasting. Sport has
become a key driver for broadcasters in increasing
market share and attracting new viewers.New digital
networks are in need of advertising and subscriber
cash flow and nothing beats sports in fulfilling these
needs. However, with an event such as the Olympics
how do non rights holders compete, and is sport
pricing itself out of reach of the regular punter?

Look out - surprises ahead
Asia is a growing market for broadcasters who are
looking for opportunities to reach an area of the world
with two-thirds of the world’s population and hoping
to reap the boundless riches that surely exist in the
region. How will they cope with the Great Firewall of
China? Will they be able to compete with channels
beaming from within the region? What opportunities
do broadcasters see for their own regional offerings?
