My best friend has just committed suicide. Don't
worry – only on Facebook. Interestingly, while
Facebook is making headlines with its new video
chatting tool in partnership with Skype, a
significant number of Facebook users in the US,
UK and Canada have deactivated their account,
committing 'Facebook suicide'. But for a
network that has captured one in nine of the
world's population such losses are probably
more than balanced out by its rapid growth in
emerging markets like India, Mexico and Brazil.
We look at Brazil in the interview with Nelson
Hoineff. Brazil's economy is leaping ahead and
as a consequence the market in pay-TV is growing
rapidly - the less well off are also joining as
subscribers. Nelson is helping local talent through
his Institute of TV Studies, and there's a link
right across the Atlantic ocean to Abu Dhabi's
twofour54 enterprise. In order to build a strong
indigenous creative industries base, twofour54
have to attract and inspire young people in the
region and show them (and their parents!) that
the media industry is a serious industry and a
great industry to be involved in. They are doing
this on a grand scale and successfully, it seems.
The lights have already been switched on and the
turf in the stadium laid, but there is still lots to
do for the teams organising the 2012 Summer
Olympics. London will play host to rights
holding broadcasters but there is also plenty on
offer for non-Olympic accredited media, as we
discovered. Eurosport for whom the Games have
already begun promises the whole gamut of
dramatic emotions – and the new speciality
vehicle for the outside races and the super slow-
mos will make sure the fans won't even want to
get up and make a cup of tea.
Where will they watch the action? So many screens
to choose from in this networked age of ours. I
recommend InterMedia's research findings on new
rules of engagement with audiences, Richard
Kastelein and Dick Rempt's piece on multiplatform
apps, and Roger Stone's analysis of social media
and broadcasting in the Arab Spring.
And there's technology – launching a fully
automated 24/7 news channel at minimal cost
seems easy peasy the way OASYS' Mark
Errington describes it, and expert mojo Stephen
Quinn reveals the tools of his trade.
And if reading about all that has exhausted you,
just sit back comfortably and travel with RTG
TV to the majestic Khibiny mountains where the
snow doesn't melt until summer.
