Broadcasters covering news on the ground have always
faced a dilemma, should they use light weight equipment,
such as satellite video phones, that enable the news
gathering team to get to the heart of the action as fast as
possible but provides low quality video quality, or should
they use heavier satellite news gathering (SNG) equipment
that although it enable the transmission of broadcast quality
video it may mean that the journalists miss the story.
Thanks to the collaboration of TANDBERG Television,
Raytheon and Vocality International this dilemma is now
solved by a new 2U system, launched at NAB 2003, that
offers high-quality video SNG communications in a field
Technology brief
Tapeless solution from BBC, Quantel
BBC Post Production
is working closely with AIB Member
Quantel
to finalise a solution for tapeless post production. The
aim of the partnership is to introduce a digital server based
solution that will be phased in to service BBC Post Production’s
customers including BBC Sport.
BBC Post Production is working with Quantel to develop a
tailored digital server-based solution that will be suitable for
modern digital widescreen production. It is designed to maximise
work efficiencies, allow better browse and media selection
facilities and improve work flow solutions in fast turn-round
activities such as sport and events.
BBC Post Production will begin with a combination of linear and
non-linear editing and move towards a complete tapeless post
production solution within three to five years. In the short term,
there will be a reduction in tape-based working although archive
capture will still take place on tape for the immediate future. Ingest
from incoming feeds, post production and server playout will all
become part of the tapeless process. The full project will involve a
phased refurbishment of BBC Post Production’s facilities beginning
with replacing existing analogue systems with a digital server based
post production system for BBC Sport. This will also be rolled out
and introduced to service other BBC and commercial customers.
Paul Grice, Director of Technology BBC comments: “The post
production market is currently seeing advances in server-based
technology and this is going to continue to change the face of the
post industrywithin the next three to five years.BBCPost Production
is at the forefront of technology in the industry and we are keen to
anticipate and drive innovation and changes in the marketplace”.
portable unit that can be quickly deployed. The new system
is a fully integrated 2U digital flyaway, capable of bi-
directional transmission of audio, video and data feed from
a remote transmission site. Due to recent improvements in
video encoding algorithms and modulators ability to work
at low symbol rates, the new TANDBERGTelevision DSNG
system can work with smaller satellite dishes and low power
amplifiers. And by providing two-way phone, data and IP
communications between the satellite downlink and remote
transmit site the new solution integrates the majority of
field newsgathering requirements into one unit.
Because of the unit’s size and ease of operation, set up is
quick and simple, permitting broadcasters to get on the air
faster. NBC News assisted during the development of this
system and is an early adopter, deploying several of the
units for its coverage from the Middle East.
This new systemwill be able to document news from across
the globe with a speed-to-air and transportability that the
industry has never been seen before. I see a bright future
for this system, with applications ranging from worldwide
broadcasters to government organisations.

Gee Broadcast partners Dalet for
Newsroom Solutions
.
As part of its open approach to providing solutions,
Gee
Broadcast
announces a partnership with
AIB member Dalet
Digital Media Systems
. Gee Broadcast manufactures the Geevs
range of Broadcast Video servers. Dalet provides the DaletPlus
News Suite solution for TV newsrooms. The partnership
agreement will provide close integration between these systems
to enhance the capabilities of both companies’ product offerings.
The Geevs range of servers has already found many applications
from Sports and News to Light Entertainment and Channel Play-
out. The open architecture of Geevs allows easy integration with
other systems to provide flexible and cost effective solutions.
Gee Broadcast says it is particularly pleased to have reached
this agreement with Dalet to enhance the use of Geevs in the
News environment.
DaletPlus News Suite for TV news production provides a full
end-to-end solution, but is modular to let users create a system
to meet their specific requirements. DaletPlus allows journalists
to work with text, audio and video, photos and news feeds on a
common interface, with tools to interface to teleprompters,
character generators and other TV equipment. This common
interface, together with a networked and integrated solution,
ensures great productivity for Journalists.
Now, using Geevs servers, rundowns can be transferred for play-
out at any time or updatedwith late breaking stories in a streamlined
way. This gives Journalists more time to prepare their stories and
ensure they get the best impact from each News programme.
