Romania’s leading news TV channel Antena 3 has expressed genuine solidarity with the recent protests against censorship of freedom of expression and Internet use in Turkey.
A letter from Antena 3’s journalists has been delivered to His Excellency, Mr. Ömür ŞÖLENDIL, the Ambassador of Turkey in Romania, to state their support for all the Turkish citizens who believe in and fight for fundamental human rights.
Adrian Ursu, one of the Antena 3 journalists present at the Turkish Embassy said that „We try to convey the message that any form of censorship must be condemned the very moment is under debate. Unfortunately, we were silent when Hungary had enforced all kinds of legislative measures to impose restrictions on the press, thinking it was an isolated episode that would have no consequences. Unfortunately, we see it has proved to be a pattern for other powers in this space of ours, more tempted to return to dictatorship, sometimes. That is why we have decided to send this letter of protest.”
Sabina Iosub, Antena 3 anchor, added „Imagine that you wrote something on Facebook and someone you do not know and will not know, decided that your posting is dangerous and removed it without appeal. That can happen in Turkey if the new Internet law will pass. Turks, like us, are passionate people, but I am convinced that eventually reason will prevail. After all, progress comes out of discussion, not monologues, and contrary points of views have led the world further, always.”
For Ionut Cristache, Antena 3 reporter, the only natural reaction is revolt. „As a journalist, you can only revolt against such an abuse which is on the brink of regulation! Any attack on freedom of speech is an attack on persona, an attack to one’s right to be free and to think freely!”
Through this action of solidarity, Antena 3 wishes to offer its support to the Turkish people who have campaigned for freedom of expression in the past days, and to spread their message further, hoping that the Turkish authorities will choose to respect the principles of democracy and fundamental human rights.
Antena 3 is the leading news channel in Romania, affiliated with CNN International and part of Intact Media Group, the largest media group in Romania. (Source: Antena 3 press release)

AP reports that a Vietnamese satellite TV platform has dropped BBC World News and CNN from its channel line-up on Thursday 16 May. K+, a joint venture between a Vietnamese company and Canal Overseas, part of the Canal+ Group, appears to be interpreting the “Decision 20” regulation – which places onerous conditions on foreign TV channels – in a particular way, in direct contrast to a majority of other Vietnam-based platforms.
AIB has been lobbying on the issue over the past few months and is now seeking further clarification both from K+ and the Vietnamese Ministry of Information and Communication.
“We are disappointed that Vietnamese audiences are having their choice of international TV channels restricted,” said Simon Spanswick, AIB chief executive. “There is still uncertainty around the proposed pay-TV regulations promulgated in Vietnam. K+ appears to be out of step with the Vietnamese market and the latest interpretation of Decision 20. We look forward to the channels that have been taken off air being restored very quickly.”
As of the European afternoon on 16 May, the K+ website was still showing BBC World News and CNN as channels available to the platform’s subscribers.

It seems as though we have been waiting a long time for voting to start in the People’s Choice category, “Best Coverage of Climate Change”. We launched the 2010 AIBs, international media excellence awards, on 12th April 2010 and were excited to announce our two new categories – one for “Best Children’s Factual Programme/Series” and the other the People’s Choice.
The People’s Choice is a radical departure for the AIB, since it will be the first time that an award has been judged by online viewers rather than a panel of distinguished broadcasters. We had lots of questions to consider before launching it: “Would broadcasters want to submit their work to be judged by online viewers?”, “Would we have enough entries?”, “Would we attract a big enough online audience?”. But we felt that with the increasing convergence of broadcast and online media it was important to reflect this with an award that involved the online community and the new ways that broadcasters need to engage with their audience and obtain direct feedback. We also felt that the chosen subject for 2010, climate change, attracts such wide interest and even controversy, that viewers will be drawn to watch the short list and make their own choice.
The first set of questions, about broadcasters’ involvement, has been satisfactorily answered with a high quality field of entries from which it was difficult to chose the short list. The resulting short list contains strong entries from major broadcasters such as the BBC, CNN and Sky, as well as important contributions from China (Phoenix Satellite TV) and the United Nations – not forgetting the Belgian entry from VRT.
Now we are excited that a small selected group are trying out our system in a “Premiere” viewing of the entries and that general voting will begin next Monday. We will be building up the campaign to involve the largest possible number of viewers from all over the world during the next month.
If you are not part of the Premiere viewing that is currently going on, why not instead have a look at some of the interesting entries that did not quite make the short list? Click here to view them.
