Channel NewsAsia presents Indonesia Presidential Election Specials

More than 180 million Indonesians will go to the polls on 9 July to elect the country’s seventh President. Who will succeed outgoing President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono? Will it be the former governor of Jakarta, Joko Widodo, or ex-general Prabowo Subianto.

Channel NewsAsia programmes, Insight and Primetime Asia, will bring viewers exclusive specials on the election for the Indonesia President.

Insight – Indonesia’s Next President

One a political newcomer with small business credentials. The other a wealthy former Special Forces general and former son-in-law of Indonesia’s strongman Suharto. The hugely popular Joko Widodo or Jokowi, who comes across as a humble and approachable leader, will come up against Prabowo Subianto, who has been campaigning hard on his perceived attributes as a tough and decisive leader in a two-horse race.

Will Jokowi’s combined strength of 4 parties with 40% of the votes be able to take on Subianto, who has amassed a formidable coalition of 6 parties with a combined strength of 49% of the votes? Who will Indonesians pick as their next leader?

Insight goes to several provinces in Indonesia to meet several key political personalities from the respective parties, former military men, analysts, the kingmakers as well as citizens to understand the preferences of the Indonesian voters ahead of the polls on 9 July.

Channel NewsAsia launches nation-wide Digital Media Competition – Days of Rage

Channel NewsAsia has launched a nation-wide school competition – Days of Rage – Digital Media Competition. The competition, a collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Student Development Curriculum Division, is held from end May 2014 as part of efforts to celebrate Singapore’s 50th year of independence in 2015.

Students from various institutions in Singapore are invited to create a video based on themes and characters seen in the channel’s highly acclaimed series, Days of Rage. Entries should show how one key character featured in the Days of Rage programme would act in today’s context, and the impact it could have on the community.

The 5-part series was first telecast on the channel from January 2014, and the adapted versions in Chinese, Malay and Tamil were subsequently shown on the respective MediaCorp mass entertainment channels. Vice President of International Productions at Channel NewsAsia Network Programming and Promotions, Ms Mok Choy Lin, says, “Days of Rage is one of our top notch documentary programmes that has been very well received from all quarters since it was first telecast. Shot with some of the highest production values, it is not only very entertaining as a TV programme, but historically instructive as well. The Ministry of Education has found the series useful in educating the youths about Singapore’s History and we want to use it to kindle interest among the young about the iconic moments in Singapore’s past and to stimulate thought on some of the events and issues. We are also planning an encore telecast of the series from 1st July 2014.”

The competition is open to all secondary school, Junior College, ITE and Polytechnic students and deadline for submission is end July. The winning entry will win a cash prize of S$1,000 and will be showcased on the Days of Rage microsite on channelnewsasia.com. (Source: Press release)

Channel NewsAsia announces plans to increase IndoChina coverage with Vietnam bureau

Leading regional broadcaster, Channel NewsAsia, announces that it intends to open a new bureau in Vietnam. This will be the channel’s 14th bureau in Asia, following the launch of the Yangon bureau in January 2014 in Myanmar. The bureau will increase Channel NewsAsia’s ability to cover the region’s developments more comprehensively, reporting from the ground with credibility and authenticity.

Ms Debra Soon, Managing Director of Channel NewsAsia says, “Vietnam, particularly Ho Chi Minh City, is a fast growing and vibrant business hub. Having a ground presence there will allow us to uncover business opportunities, look at companies and developments, and beyond business, report on how a new generation of Vietnamese see themselves and the rest of Asia. We have been covering South East Asia well for the past 15 years, it’s time to go even further and beef up our ability to cover the IndoChina region even better, a mass of over 220 million people in Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos.”

Ms Soon made the announcement at Channel NewsAsia’s Vietnam Business Insights in Ho Chi Minh City today.

The channel’s premier regional business forum gathered expert speakers and international corporate leaders to discuss the new growth model for sustainable development in Vietnam. Delegates shared views on “Redefining Sustainable Business Growth for Vietnam”, with a look at how the transformation of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and the private sector need to drive growth in the country.

Panel speaker and CEO of Ho Chi Minh Securities, Mr Johan Nyvene, said “Vietnam has re-emerged from global economic challenges and has rewarded savvy investors with good opportunities. Channel NewsAsia’s Vietnam Business Insights provides an excellent ’insider’s look’ at local issues.”

Leading Vietnam economist, Dr Le Dang Doanh, noted the strong economic outlook for the country, with international financial institutions forecasting a stable annual GDP growth rate at 5.6 – 5.7% in the coming years. But he said there remain other challenges.

CEO of KPMG Vietnam and Cambodia, Mr Warrick Cleine, said “sustainable growth will not occur without a robust corporate sector. There’s a real need for local companies to step up their service levels to be competitive.”

The panel discussion today is facilitated by the channel’s award-winning business journalist and presenter, Ms Lin Xue Ling.
