Regional broadcaster Channel NewsAsia has partnered KapanLagi Network, Indonesia’s largest online lifestyle news and entertainment media, in a strategic deal that will see business and media collaborations in many areas.
The announcement was made today at a networking event at Exodus Jakarta for the start-up community, including venture capitalists, corporate clients in the start-up scene, potential advertisers and sponsors, and the media. This event is jointly organized by Channel NewsAsia and KapanLagi Network to bring together the who’s who in the Indonesian start-up ecosystem, in conjunction with the launch of Season 2 of Channel NewsAsia’s Start-UP project. The event aims to encourage and nurture entrepreneurial spirit in Indonesia and regionally.
About Start-UP
Start-UP is a multi-platform project that includes a reality TV series which tracks the journey of a group of entrepreneurs going through the relentlessly competitive paces on multiple platforms – television, blogs, web portal and “live” webchat. Their aim is to pitch for part of the S$2 million in seed funding for their business ideas. Alongside the series is an interactive online portal at channelnewsasia.com that serves as a solution reference and contains insights on the start-up landscape. (see Annex for details)
Joint projects
A prime project in the partnership is the localisation of Start-UP with KapanLagi Network, presented in Bahasa Indonesia for the burgeoning local digital market. Channel NewsAsia will share production material and expertise for the construction of the microsite for Start-UP to KapanLagi Network. There will be on-site consultancy for the TV programme to capture the process of participants from pitching for venture capital seed money to the selection of finalists and winners in the contest. Plans are being made to broadcast this Indonesian series on local television.
Introducing KLN Play
At the event today, KapanLagi Network introduced a new arm of business, KLN Play. As an incubator of start-ups, KLN Play will offer budding Indonesian entrepreneurs seed funding and strategic support to jumpstart their businesses. This includes helping to build traffic, boosting the branding; providing IT advice, mentorship and potential advertising links. KLN Play is eyeing start-ups on e-commerce on the digital, mobile and online platforms for any category of business, with special interest in start-ups which think mobile first. It is looking to work with up to 10 start-ups in 2015, investing in them directly or to co-invest with other companies. “This relationship brings together two of the region’s top enterprises in an area of common interest, how to grow future businesses in Asia, particularly in the digital space. We believe we can leverage KapanLagi Network’s reach in Indonesia, and license our groundbreaking format for Start-UP in a win-win formula. I look forward to developing further collaborations with our partners,” said Ms Debra Soon, Head of MediaCorp’s News Segment.
News collaboration
Channel NewsAsia and KapanLagi Network will also cooperate to leverage the strength of news coverage of both parties on the digital platform. With its extensive network of correspondents and staff in the region, Channel NewsAsia will work closely with KapanLagi, which has a proven track record in covering Indonesia, to collaborate to support each other in news coverage. News exchange online, sharing of technical expertise, training stints and staff attachments are part of this collaboration.

Regional broadcaster Channel NewsAsia launches its first feature film, Little People Big Dreams. Shot in High Definition, the documentary is the first original production under the banner of ‘Channel NewsAsia Feature Films’. It goes behind the curtains of a controversial theme park, Dwarves Empire, in China’s Yunnan province. The multi-million dollar theme park simulates a fantasy land where dozens of little people are hired to perform for paying tourists. The controversy surrounding the theme park is an obvious one – does it provide the little people with a stable livelihood at the expense of their basic rights?
Little People Big Dreams will premiere in Asia at the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) held at the National Museum of Singapore, Gallery Theatre, on Sunday, 7 December 2014 at 7.15pm. Following the screening, a discussion with the audience will be held with the film’s Director, Mr Mak CK, and Channel NewsAsia’s Vice President of Network Programming and Promotions, and Commissioning Editor of Little People Big Dreams, Ms Mok Choy Lin. This Asian premiere comes at the heels of an immensely successful world premiere at the CPH:DOX Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival. Little People Big Dreams was the first-ever Singapore-produced film to be featured at the Copenhagen festival. It saw two sold-out screenings on 11 and 14 November 2014. A third screening on 17 November was added following the overwhelming response.
Apart from the world premiere, Little People Big Dreams has also received numerous international accolades. In May this year, it was selected for the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program-CNEX workshop in Beijing. The documentary was also awarded ‘Best Project Pitch’ at the CNEX Chinese Doc Forum in Taipei in October. It is slated for various international festivals, including the International Festival of Audiovisual Programmes in France in January 2015.
Mr Mak says, “When I first read about the theme park online, I was immediately intrigued by the existence of such a bizarre attraction in this day and age. I have always been interested in microcosms of society and communities that are discriminated or gravely under-represented in the media. Through this film, I’ve had the privilege of learning about the lives of little people in the world’s most populous nation. The personal life stories featured in the film are both heartbreaking and inspiring. Over the course of making this film, I struggled with how I feel about the park. And I’ve come to realise that many a time, morality comes in different shades of grey.” Ms Mok comments, “This feature documentary marks a production milestone for the channel and has already attracted extraordinary interest from worldwide distributors. We are delighted to be one of the few broadcasters in Asia to support feature-length documentaries and encourage filmmakers in the region to send us their incredible stories.”

Leading regional broadcaster, Channel NewsAsia, brings together top industry and government leaders in a forum to discuss “Sustaining Growth and Development in Malaysia” in Kuala Lumpur on 4 September. Held at the JW Marriott Hotel, Senator Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, will give the keynote address at the Malaysia Business Insights 2014.
This forum, which is by-invitation only, is an invaluable platform for senior executives and government officials to discuss long-term sustainable development in the country. The Malaysian economy is expecting positive growth over the next two years, and the government is strengthening the business fronts and promoting investment. Some measures include announcing the lifting of barriers on new foreign unit trust management companies, the removal of mandatory credit ratings, the liberalisation of equity shareholding for credit-rating agencies and permission for full foreign ownership of international credit-rating agencies. This agenda aims to build a stable and inclusive financial system and encourage innovation. “The rapid change, complexity and competitiveness of the global market, coupled with new government initiatives, have changed the way Malaysia does business with the world. Malaysia Business Insights brings together leaders and change makers to examine how we can achieve long-term, sustainable economic growth in Malaysia, and leverage its position in the region to ignite economic and social progress in ASEAN,” said Melissa Goh, Channel NewsAsia’s Malaysia Bureau Chief, who will moderate the panel discussions at the forum.
The panel includes speakers from key industry and government organisations:
• Datuk Dr Rebecca Fatima Sta. Maria, Secretary General, Ministry of International Trade
and Industry
• Dato’ Abdul Rauf Rashid, Country Managing Partner, Ernst & Young Malaysia
• Mr. Teh Kee Sin, National President, SMI Association of Malaysia
• Dr Mohd Emir Mavani Abdullah, Group President/CEO, Felda Global Ventures Holdings
Berhad
One of the strategic areas of discussion will be about how small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can leverage technology and focus on talent management and succession planning to expand and reach global consumers. SMEs are the backbone of the Malaysian economy, accounting for 90% of all business in the manufacturing, services and agricultural sectors, as well as providing 65% of total employment.
Ms Goh added, “The experts will give valuable insights about the most important trends and unique business culture, and share ways to benefit from the ongoing structural reforms. These discussions will help executives better come to grips with the business dynamics of this country.”
