International multimedia broadcaster supports world’s leading factual programming awards

The Association for International Broadcasting is pleased to announce a landmark partnership arrangement with Radio Taiwan International for the annual journalism and factual programming awards, the AIBs.

2022 is the 18th year that the UK-headquartered Association for International Broadcasting has staged the AIBs to celebrate work produced for TV, radio and digital platforms.

“We are delighted to welcome Radio Taiwan International as the event partner for the AIBs 2022,” says Simon Spanswick, chief executive of the Association for International Broadcasting. “Taiwan has one of the freest media environments in Asia, so it is absolutely fitting that RTI is stepping up to support the AIBs that celebrate journalism and freedom of expression internationally. The partnership with RTI is central to the continuing success and growth of these renowned and respected awards that showcase outstanding news reporting and factual programming from around the world.”

Cheryl Lai, Chairperson of RTI, adds: “RTI is committed to freedom of the media as a pillar of democracy. We believe that it is vitally important to support those who are holding truth to power around the world, and to celebrate their essential work. RTI is glad to be partnering with these important awards for journalism and factual programming. We look forward to marking the achievements of some of the world’s best programme-makers who bring the stories that matter to global audiences.”

Taiwan supports freedom of the media

Taiwan, a country of around 23.5 million people, is a major economic player in Asia and is noted as one of the world’s leading producers of computer technology. Taiwan has a stable, vibrant democracy with an independent judiciary and the country enjoys one of the freest media environments in Asia, ranking 38th globally in the 2022 RSF media freedom index. RTI is Taiwan’s international multimedia broadcaster that can trace its roots back to 1928, making it one of world’s longest continuously operating broadcasters.

The AIBs celebrate global journalism

The AIBs are the world’s leading awards for factual productions across TV, radio and online and attract entries from broadcasters and production companies in over 40 countries. The competition is divided into 18 categories that range from daily journalism to investigative documentary, sports journalism to human interest.

Entries to the AIBs 2022 can be submitted until 1 July 2022. Work is welcome in all languages and can be for any audience – local, regional, national, or international. After shortlisting, the finalists’ work goes to a global panel of judges who make the final decision on the competition’s winners.

The AIBs 2022 will be presented at a gala dinner in London on 11 November. This will be the first live event after a two-year hiatus caused by the pandemic. The AIBs will take place at a new venue, Church House Westminster in the heart of London – right by Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament. The event is traditionally attended by guests from around the world, including key opinion leaders within broadcasting and production companies, and in politics and regulation, alongside journalists, editors, producers, and directors.

The Longlist for the 13th annual AIBs – the international awards for factual content, is announced today, Tuesday 12 September 2017

  • Factual content from countries as diverse as Papua New Guinea, Denmark, the UK and Argentina

  • 18 distinct categories to reward factual video, audio and online productions

From the hundreds of entries, the Association for International Broadcasting’s shortlisting team has narrowed down the list of contenders across the 18 programme categories.

“This year’s range, breadth and depth of entries is astonishing,” says Simon Spanswick, Chief Executive of the Association for International Broadcasting. “The energy demonstrated by the programme producers around the world is astonishing. We have seen and heard remarkable stories told imaginatively and sensitively – despite many being truly difficult and disturbing subjects.”

“To illustrate the range of work entered, there are political stories from the USA, Philippines, North Korea and the Maldives,” says Clare Dance, the AIBs Co-ordinator. “Deeply moving personal stories have come from Korea, Japan, the UK and Denmark. And then there’s news coverage of the major events of the past year.”

The international spread of entries is reinforced this year, with work from almost 40 countries submitted. Work has been submitted for the first time from Italy and Papua New Guinea, while increased numbers of productions have come from Europe, North and South America, the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region.

Inclusion on the AIBs 2017 Longlist indicates that the production is among the world’s best factual content produced for television, radio or online platforms.

International judges

The AIBs 2017 Shortlist will be announced on 22 September as the panel of 55 jurors in more than 20 countries starts work on the final judging of entries.

The 2017 winners will be announced at a gala evening at LSO St Luke’s in London on 1 November, hosted by Matthew Amroliwala (pictured left) presenter and journalist at BBC Global News.

The leading awards for quality factual productions

First awarded in 2005, the AIBs are recognised as one of the leading prizes for factual productions in any language. The list of winners includes the world’s leading broadcasters and production companies, and notable personalities including Sir David Attenborough, Larry King and Christiane Amanpour.

The AIBs 2017 are sponsored by Celebro Media and Signiant.

Wilfred Frost at the 10th Annual AIB Awards

Wilfred Frost at the 10th Annual AIB Awards

At the 10th annual AIB Awards in London on 5 November, Wilfred Frost, son of journalist Sir David Frost, announced the inaugural Sir David Frost Memorial Lecture. The talk by a major public figure to be announced will be held on 18 February at the Association for International Broadcasting’s #iamabroadcaster Global Media Summit.

A journalist in his own right, Wilfred Frost announced the lecture in his introduction to the “In Conversation” segment of the AIB Awards gala. This year’s In Conversation featured an interview by Frost interview with documentary filmmaker Olly Lambert, who won the AIB last year in the category of Best Middle East Documentary for his film Syria: Across The Lines.

Frost said: “We debated whether an annual talk should be given in Dad’s name by a fellow TV presenter. Or perhaps by a fellow media entrepreneur or executive. But in the end, the answer was simple. If Dad were alive today, who in the world would he most want to be interviewing? On Wednesday 18th February 2015 Paradine Productions and AIB will bring you an address from an individual that fits that description – someone who can not only tell us what is happening on a set of crucial issues in the world today, but can in fact make news themselves with what they say. We will be announcing the speaker for February very soon.”

Sir David Frost, who died last year, is one of the most famous journalist of the 20th century. He is most known for his interviews with notable political figures, including eight British Prime Ministers and seven US Presidents. His series of interviews with US President Richard Nixon, broadcast on American TV in 1977, drew the largest TV audience for a political interview in US TV history. The Nixon interviews were adapted into the play Frost/Nixon, which was adapted into a film in which Frost was played by Martin Sheen, directed by Ron Howard.

The #iamabroadcaster Media Summit will offer the global media industry two days of intensive discussion on the upheavals and opportunities facing broadcasters today. Held in London from 17-18 February, #iamabroadcaster will feature provocative and challenging discussions with major players and thinkers both from within and outside the media industry. Attendees will leave with an entirely new outlook on the broadcast industry and a new definition of what the word “broadcasting” means in the 21st century.

Further information, including venue, line-up, and sponsorship opportunities will be available on the AIB website.
