It’s a secret

The graphs showing the number of votes cast for each of the different entries in the People’s Choice category for “Best Coverage of Climate Change” have now been removed from this website.

Voting will continue until the end of October 31st but for the last four days, the results will be kept secret.  The winning entry will be announced, along with the winners of all the other categories, at the awards ceremony on November 9th.

So if you want your favourite entry to win, you need to vote and tell as many of your friends to vote in the last few days.

Voting has started

It seems as though we have been waiting a long time for voting to start in the People’s Choice category, “Best Coverage of Climate Change”. We launched the 2010 AIBs, international media excellence awards, on 12th April 2010 and were excited to announce our two new categories – one for “Best Children’s Factual Programme/Series” and the other the People’s Choice.

The People’s Choice is a radical departure for the AIB, since it will be the first time that an award has been judged by online viewers rather than a panel of distinguished broadcasters. We had lots of questions to consider before launching it: “Would broadcasters want to submit their work to be judged by online viewers?”, “Would we have enough entries?”, “Would we attract a big enough online audience?”. But we felt that with the increasing convergence of broadcast and online media it was important to reflect this with an award that involved the online community and the new ways that broadcasters need to engage with their audience and obtain direct feedback. We also felt that the chosen subject for 2010, climate change, attracts such wide interest and even controversy, that viewers will be drawn to watch the short list and make their own choice.

The first set of questions, about broadcasters’ involvement, has been satisfactorily answered with a high quality field of entries from which it was difficult to chose the short list. The resulting short list contains strong entries from major broadcasters such as the BBC, CNN and Sky, as well as important contributions from China (Phoenix Satellite TV) and the United Nations – not forgetting the Belgian entry from VRT.

Now we are excited that a small selected group are trying out our system in a “Premiere” viewing of the entries and that general voting will begin next Monday. We will be building up the campaign to involve the largest possible number of viewers from all over the world during the next month.

If you are not part of the Premiere viewing that is currently going on, why not instead have a look at some of the interesting entries that did not quite make the short list? Click here to view them.

Short list for People’s Choice announced

We are delighted to announce a high quality and truly international set of short listed entries for the People’s Choice category at the 2010 AIBs.

• “Low Impact Man” from VRT, Belgium
• “Earth Rescue Operation” from Phoenix Satellite Television in Hong Kong, China
• “Hard Talk on the Road to Greenland” from the BBC
• “Ross Kemp: Battle for the Amazon” from Sky Television
• “21st Century” from the UN

Climate change portal now live!

Homepage image from AIB climate change portal AIB is proud to present its climate change portal, developed with technology from UltraKnowledge. It automatically pulls in updates from news sites and blogs across the web, tags them and then cross-links them, providing a fantastic resource for those interested in climate change to check the latest news and opinions, and to cross-check the stories across multiple sources.

AIB climate change portal newswallAs you can see from the screenshots, the portal also provides a wall of images from the posted stories, which gives viewers a new visual way of browsing through and finding items of interest. Although the portal has only just been developed, it already contains (and has tags for) thousands of articles and posts, with hundreds more being added every day.

We will be using the portal to attract those interested in the debate on climate change, who will find it an invaluable resource. Also, we will be advertising the People’s Choice award and the vote for the “Best Coverage of Climate Change” at the 2010 AIBs, and so attracting many voters.

Full details of the portal can be found in the press release.

As a non-profit organisation, the AIB is looking for a partner to help pay for the development of this portal. It provides a great opportunity for a brand to associate itself with climate change issues and ensuring that the debate is as open and informed as possible. The portal technology can also be used to automatically pull in, cross-tag and present any type of content in innovative ways – not just text, but also images, audio and video. It therefore has enormous potential for broadcasters and programme rights holders looking to make best use of their archives. Anyone interested in these opportunities should contact roger.stone@aib.org.uk

1GOAL campaign continues

The campaign by onr of our sponsors, 1GOAL, used the World Cup as a major focus. But with the World Cup over, much of the real work, is still to be done. 15 million people have signed up to support “Education for All”. Now we have to use this support, from footballers, celebrities and politicians, but most of all from ordinary people all over the world, to pressure world leaders to ensure every person receives an education which will help equip them for life, including getting out of poverty.

We are using the build up to the 2010 AIBs to keep promoting the cause of “Education for All”, looking at how broadcasting can help in both in campaigning and delivery of education.

This 1GOAL video celebrates what has been achieved so far:

15 million signups – but 72 million still need access to education. We need to show them more support

Record number of entries

We are delighted to announce that have received a record number of entries for the 2010 AIBs with many coming from broadcasters and independent producers who are entering for the first time.   There is a good spread across most categories.  In particular we are very pleased at the number of entries for our two new categories with 15 entries for the “Best children’s factual programme/series” and 10 for the “Best coverage of climate change”.

Over the next month, we will be examining in more detail the way broadcasting is dealing with climate change as we prepare for the People’s Choice vote of our shortlist in this category
