AIB The Channel April 2004 - page 34

Joyvani Chetty
is one of sixteen participants from all over
the world who attended Deutsche Welle’s “Advanced
Engineering Seminar: Planning and Tendering Procedures
for Modern Television Stations” in March and April this
year. After completing his first degree in Australia, he
returned to the Seychelles and has been with the
Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation for 20 years,
the last 7 years as SBC’s Chief Engineer. How
did he find out about the course? Well, it
was all amazingly simple: he surfed the web,
came across DW’s subsidised courses, found
one that fitted exactly what he needed,
wrote to DW … and the rest is history.
We spoke to him halfway through the
course: the project management element of the course behind
him, Joyvani Chetty was about to embark on a professional
excursion, visiting a number of stations in Germany, and would
then return to Berlin to cover planning and tendering procedures.
It was evident that he was enjoying the course very much –
having been pushed into a managerial position and having had
to learn on the job he felt project management was one area
that he wanted to know more about. What he particularly likes
about the course is the way it is structured: a lecture followed
by practical sessions, individual presentations as well as group
exercises, a highly participative and interactive style, with English
the teaching language. Accommodation is in apartments, with
two participants sharing kitchen and bathroom between them.
AIB INTERVIEW
And there is also a social side to the course with a
sightseeing tour of Berlin thrown in: an induction course
explains about life in Germany and gives an overview
of German politics and the state of the economy.
When we asked him whether he had benefitted from
the course and whether he would recommend
it, the answer was a resounding “yes”. At
SBC in Mahe, he oversees and manages all
engineering projects as Project Manager.
The DW course has provided him with tools
to manage those projects better and to
be aware of the pitfalls – knowledge of
risk management, which was covered in
the course, is vitally important. He will
pass what he has learnt down to other colleagues back home –
he usually involves his subordinates in the planning stage. And
he will encourage other colleagues to attend DW training courses
– not just the engineers but also the programme makers.
