8K TV SHIPMENTS
1M BY 2019
The advent of 8K broadcasting
in Japan for the 2020
olympics is expected to boost
resolution increases. HIS
predicts shipments of 8K UHD
resolution (7680 x 4320 pixels)
TVs will increase from 2,700
shipped worldwide in 2015 to
911,000 in 2019. The forecast
is based on the 65-inch
screen size, which has by far
the highest volume in
production and will account
for almost 80% of 8K TV
shipments in 2019. The
biggest inhibitor to the growth
of 8K TV is likely to be
consumer screen size
preferences.
BBC moves at home and away
At the beginning of July, BBC
Director General Tony Hall
announced changes to the
structure and organisation of the
BBC that will make it simpler,
leaner and more effective for the
future. over recent years the
BBC has built an impressive
savings record that will deliver
over £1.5bn of savings a year by
2017. Much of this has been done
through cutting administration
and property costs, pay and
headcount restraint, plus tough
decisions like more daytime
repeats and shared sports rights.
Even though a new independent
study by PwC ranks the BBC
amongst the most efficient
organisations in the public and
regulated private sectors,
additional savings must be found
to cover the expected £150m
shortfall of licence fee income in
2016/17 – as a result of more
people using iPlayer, mobiles
and online catch-up. The new
measures being proposed will
help bridge that gap by delivering
£50m in savings from merging
divisions, cutting down
management layers, reducing
managers and improving
processes. More than 1,000
posts will be lost as a result.
Throughout the summer the
BBC will be identifying where the
specific savings opportunities
are with final decisions expected
to be taken in early autumn.
on the programming front,
BBC Africa is now bringing
football fans in Africa the live
action of the new season of the
Barclays Premier League in four
languages – in French, Hausa,
DW and Channels TV co-operation deal
Deutsche Welle and Channels TV
have agreed a partnership deal
that will include input from both
sides. Journalists from Channels
TV will also benefit from DW
training. Speaking at the signing
in Lagos, DW Director General
Peter Limbourg said the
coverage on Channels TV by DW
correspondents at the German
Stock Exchange in Frankfurt will
bring economic information not
only about Germany but also
about Europe to Nigeria. Boason
omofaye, head of business news
at Channels TV, called the
partnership strategically
important from an economic and
business perspective, given that
Nigeria is the largest economy in
Africa while Germany is Europe’s
largest. Cooperation is expected
to expand to other shows such
as
Africa on the Move
that show-
cases ordinary people seeking to
make positive changes to their
environ-ment. CEo John Momoh
welcomed the partnership which
will enable Channels TV to tell
African stories to wider societies,
specifically to Europe and to the
rest of the world.
